1. Engage your child with their learning. It is not enough to drop them off at the tutor or put them online and walk away. Continuing to work with your child daily on their skills will help them maintain what they've learned. Often times tutors offer suggestions to the parents, for example practicing multiplication facts, sight words, or reading daily. This is a great opportunity to get involved with their learning. When parents are involved it really does matter to a child!
2. Offer praise when they make small gains. This says that you notice them and that you are proud of their efforts. It encourages them to continue working hard.
3. Be and stay consistent. Canceling tutoring sessions can imply you do not value learning. Create a safe space for learning. Make this time untouchable and create an atmosphere of study for the entire house, no distractions, this lets children know you value education and that it is important.
I have been a tutor for almost four years. I assess the student and then tutor them in the areas that show deficiency. A sure way to guarantee a successful tutoring experience is for parents to be involved in the process.
