Summer Learning Gap

Summer is approaching and many families are preparing for vacations and camps for their children.  You've made it to the end of the school year and everyone is relieved and ready for a break. But hold on before you get too excited! This is a perfect time to evaluate the year.  Did your child struggle with any subjects? Did your child end the year with a C or lower? These are important questions to consider because the Summer Reading Gap is real and causes students to start school in the fall, behind. How do we prevent the summer learning gap?

Continuous learning is important throughout the summer, it helps student maintain the information they've learned and prepares them for the new school year. As an educator, I would encourage students, especially those that have struggled throughout the year, to get a tutor or go to summer school. The options are wide open, online tutors can teach one or two hours a week even while you're on vacation.

A great example is a girl who struggled with reading throughout the year. Mom hired an online tutor to work with her two days a week one hour at a time. The tutor will help her grasp concepts that she struggled with throughout the year. When the new school year begins she starts with confidence.
Without the extra help she would enter school still confused about missed concepts or forgotten information, starting school already behind. Use the summer to get on track or ahead, don't waste valuable time. Sacrifice now to avoid problems in the future, it will be well worth it!
