The Top 5 Reading Tips for Young Readers Series

Tip #1 Make sure your child is reading on the correct reading level.

Have you ever gone to the store with your child and he or she finds a colorful book that they insist on you buying? When you look at the book it is clearly too difficult for them. If you ever faced this kind of situation simply guide your kiddo over to books that they are able to read. Be sure you know your child's reading level.  When children read books that are frustrating or difficult it is not enjoyable. They will eventually lose interest and if forced to read they can develop a distaste for reading. To ensure your child enjoys reading please make sure he or she is reading on the correct reading level.

In primary grades (K-2) children learn to read and in the upper elementary grades (3-5) children read to learn. As they learn to read children can comprehend what they are reading but the key is making sure they are reading a text that is not too easy or too hard. If the text is too difficult then children will spend too much time trying to decode words becoming so focused on decoding that comprehension is lost. If a text is too easy it doesn't offer new growth opportunities. Finding their sweet spot in reading not only increases understanding but also increases fluency.

If you don't know your child's reading level you can perform a quick reading diagnostic yourself, click here for help. Please let me know if you have questions.  I will discuss tip #2 on my next post.

Happy Reading!
