Tip #2 Consistency
Let's face it, there are some children who just do not like to read. This can be tough for parents who want their children to be readers. There are many things you can do to help your kiddo. One way is to be an example. Set aside a time during the day when everyone in the house is reading or at least you and your child. This can be 15-20 minutes a day when you both just stop what you are doing and read. You can read separate books but this sends a powerful message that you value reading and you want to share this gift with your child.
There are all sorts of reasons why reading is important. Reading increases your vocabulary bank, improves grammar, prompts imagination, helps with academics, and increases your knowledge stock. When children read with purpose, reading is justified. This is a great strategy to use when they are passionate about a topic. If your child likes rocks well this gives them a reason to read about rocks, or sea animals, or space. Whatever they fancy reading about it can extend their understanding of the topic but more importantly, they will be reading!
Lastly, I would encourage parents to ask questions afterward. This will help improve their comprehension and recall ability. Ask them specific information about the topic. Use the 5 W's (who, what, when, where, why) and engage your child in a conversation. Studies encourage having extended conversations with your children to increase their confidence.
Consistency is the key to being an avid reader. Reading is an essential component of everything in life. Without it, the very basic life functions will be a challenge.
