Freshly sharped pencils, new book bags, and new clothes. It's time for children to return to school. With excitement and anticipation they go to their classes not knowing what the year will bring, but excited to begin again, well at least for the first two weeks.
Some parents are sending their small children to school with tears, and hopeful that they will be good students. It is my hope that this year will bring forth many adventures for all involved. Learning is beautiful and should be valued because it is the one thing that can't be taken from you "knowledge is power," right? I have raised two amazing young men, one has gone to college and graduated and the other will begin his college journey in a few weeks. I think one of the most important lessons that I learned early was to listen to my son's and give them conversation. By giving them opportunities to talk and discuss their lives was valuable. It taught them how to be effective communicators and understand they have a voice and that their lives are important.
School can bring many challenges as well. Being directly involved with your child's education will ensure you're in the know. Communicating with teachers and being involved with the school community is valuable. Understand teachers have so many responsibilities and pressures aside from teaching your child. Volunteering your services even if it's once a month is helpful. Cultivating routines early in the school year will give them stability, for example homework, reading, and bedtimes are important and should be scheduled everyday, even on weekends.
Let this be a year of great learning!
Happy School Year!
